Newborn Attendance

A paediatrician can be present in the theatre whether the baby is born via a caesarean section or natural birth.

She will also check on the baby every day while you are in the hospital to make sure that the baby is healthy, that all observations are normal, and that the baby is feeding well.

If a different paediatrician was assigned for the baby's birth and hospital stay, it is recommended that he or she complete the baby's hospital stay, after which you can ask Dr Bassier to take over for the six-week evaluation. You are also welcome to bring the baby sooner for a check-up.

Please note that Bassier can only attend caesarean sections or be present at the delivery of babies born at Melomed Hospital in Bellville. If your baby was born at another hospital, you can still have Dr Bassier to take over the care of your baby once he/she is discharged.

Although most children are born without problems, some newborns are at high-risk birth.

Complications that might require the help of a paediatrician include:

  • Respiratory or digestive systems that aren't fully developed
  • Premature labour
  • Lack of oxygen

After giving birth, Dr Bassier will be available to assist you and your baby adjust to life. Feel free to make an appointment for an antenatal visit before your delivery to discuss all your questions and concerns for feeding and taking care of the newborn.
